Beginner course | Four lessons

Learn pickleball

Learn the court, the first two bounces, scoring, and safe doubles movement.

Start with the court
01Court and kitchen
  • The court is 20 feet wide and 44 feet long.
  • The non-volley zone extends 7 feet from both sides of the net.
  • A volley cannot be played while touching that zone or its line.
02Serve and two-bounce rule
  • Serve from behind the baseline into the diagonally opposite service court.
  • The serve must bounce before the return.
  • The return must also bounce before either side can volley.
03Scoring
  • In standard side-out scoring, only the serving side scores.
  • Call the serving score first, then the receiving score.
  • In doubles, the server number is called last.
04Doubles movement and safety
  • Move forward, back, and sideways with your partner.
  • Call the ball early by saying mine.
  • Keep space for paddles and stop play when someone enters the court.

Text equivalent: a 20 by 44 foot court is divided by the net. Seven-foot non-volley zones sit on both sides. Service courts occupy the remaining four quadrants; the serve travels diagonally and both the serve and return must bounce.
